How lucky am I?!?
So there I was, attending my first art show at a fancy gallery in New York. There were paintings from all over the world, and in every style. There were statues carved of the most creamy white marble, and sculptures made by masterful hands. Well long story short, I knocked over a statue of a bright colored parrot and it broke into pieces. No one saw my mistake but I didn’t know what to do. It was at that moment I remembered I had just received an Amazon package as I was leaving my office. What was in that package you ask? A huge assortment of play doh I ordered for my grand daughter! “Perfect” I thought to myself! I ran down the hall, and repeatedly smashed the elevator button. “Hurry! Hurry!” I muttered waiting the 10 seconds it took for the elevator to arrive at my floor which felt more like 30 minutes. As I reached the lobby I ran into a coworker who introduced me to an artist friend of his. He described his parrot statue and how he couldn’t wait to show it to me. Little did he know I had already seen it. It was “smashingly” beautiful. Knowing now that I couldn’t come back into the lobby, I snatched the playdoh from my trunk and hurried around the back of the building. Imagining in my head the movie versions of fire escapes, I would just climb 10 flights of small stairs and platforms, and I could use the fire entrance to bypass my coworker and the artist. As I rounded the back of the building, what did I find? I ladder type fire escape but it was 9 feet up or better and even in my best shape in my 20’s I could barely get near a basketball rim. There was however a drain pipe. I found it rather easy to make my way up the clamps a very generous contractor used to fit this pipe to the brick wall. I only had to get to the second floor before I found an open window. I made my way back up to the gallery and saw no sign of the artist. I got into a janitor closet and opened the box. WOW! So many colors! Unfortunately I wasn’t supplied with the exact color of the original parrot statue, but with so many colors, it was easy to blend them and get it pretty close. I’d say 95%. 8 different shades of green were included thankfully! And I had taken pictures of the original before the accident and I copied it as best as I could. Satisfied with my work, I set it up in the gallery seconds before another group passed thru to admire all the works of art. They paused at the parrot and chatted amongst one another but I couldn’t make out what they were saying. I edged closer to catch a few words and to my surprise they were praising the work. How I wish I could have claimed responsibility but I couldn’t. The artist arrived seconds later and studied “his” piece from top to bottom. He could tell something was definitely different but the praise must have drowned out his suspicions. That, or the alcohol had diminished his senses. But I patted him on the back and made my way out the door. This playdoh saved my dignity and possibly my job.
